Overcoming hurdles in goals...

So, essentially, goals allow us to move closer to so set values we have established through identifying our philosophy. As previously said, this is not a simple process and thus takes time to develop. However, just taking an initial step on this journey can help clarify our purpose within the sport, and help increase our motivation to participate in sport. It is also essential to identify some potential upcoming hurdles throughout this process, which may prevent us from hitting our goals. The fact is that you won't necessarily achieve 100% of your goals, and we must accept such an outlook. Now, this doesn't mean bearing 'failure' and losing motivation to achieve our values, but understanding that we can fail and still live our values through sport.

So, think, if I can't achieve my goal, how do I still live my value in sport?

It could be as simple as this...

Value: Mastery

Goal: Arrive 20 minutes early to my team practice to train on the passing off both hands.

Hurdle: Terrible traffic and family situation, which prevented me from getting to train early.

Overcoming: Accepting that I will feel frustrated by missing such a goal but still complete actions that embody my values.

New Action - Messaging a teammate (accountability) to stay after training to work on passing.

This is a prime example of how your motivation may take a hit in missing such a goal, but you can still choose actions which moves you closer to your values. By creating such action plans, we can help prepare ourselves for such situations and see ways to be flexible with our goals and still achieve desired outcomes.

So, look through your list, identify some hurdles for your goals, and find ways to still move towards the values you live through sport. This is also an excellent tool for coaches to use with teams!
